A packaged food label in the United States will need to include the following mandatory items according to U.S. Food and Drug Administration food-labeling rules (21 CFR 101): a statement of the identity of the food, net quantity of contents, ingredients listed in descending order by weight, Nutrition Facts panel, declaration of the presence of allergens, and name and place of business of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

What should I put on a food label?

A retail food label in the U.S. needs at a minimum six elements: (1) a statement of identity, (2) a statement of net weight or volume, (3) a full listing of ingredients by descending weight, (4) declaration of allergens, (5) the Nutrition Facts panel, and (6) the identity and address of the manufacturer, packer, or distributor.

Meat and poultry products are under the jurisdiction of the Food Safety and Inspection Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), which requires a sixth mandatory element, an inspection legend, and often mandates additional “standards of identity” among the mandatory label features. Home-based (cottage-food) operations may be surprised that their state’s labeling laws will likely require the name, address, and phone number of the business directly on the ingredient listing.

Allergen declarations are a common source of labeling problems.

Failure to declare allergens (a labeling issue, not a spoilage issue or contamination issue) accounts for most FDA food recalls according to Sedgwick’s 2024 Recall Index, which identified undeclared allergens as the leading cause of FDA food recalls. US law currently recognizes nine major allergens: milk, egg, fish, crustacean shellfish, tree nuts, peanuts, wheat, soybean, and sesame, which the FASTER Act made the ninth major allergen, with labeling required as of January 1, 2023.

Important: US ≠ EU

If you’re planning to market in Europe, you’ll need a different label.

EU Regulation 1169/2011 on food information to consumers mandates declaration of 14 major allergens (not nine), highlights allergens in the ingredients, and requires QUID (quantitative ingredient declaration), mandatory date marking, and a Nutrition Facts panel on the back of the package. A single recipe often requires a different label for each market.

Are food packaging labels safe for direct food contact?

Most label contact is indirect (not a wrapper), but this distinction makes a big difference. It’s not the sticker itself which regulators care about but the adhesive, particularly FDA 21 CFR 175.105 for the US and Regulation (EC) 1935/2004 and (EU) 10/2011 for plastics, to ensure no contaminants transfer to food. Once you’ve got the material down, two practical choices remain: form factor and printing process. Both have more impact on cost and turnaround time than most first-time buyers would guess, and both should be settled before the artwork is finalized, because the coating a press needs is chosen at order time — not at the machine.

What’s the difference between roll labels and sheet labels?

Roll labels come on a continuous liner and are designed to run through automatic, high-speed labeling equipment – the workhorse for high-volume food manufacturing. Sheet labels come pre-cut on a backing sheet and are meant for desktop inkjet or laser printers – a great option for short runs, startups and those printing in-house. In short: roll is about throughput; sheet is about flexibility and low minimums.

Printing process comes next, after the facestock and the coating.

For roll production and maximum compatibility, flexographic printing (including UV flexo) is your standard. Digital inkjet, either aqueous or UV, is a smart choice for short runs and variable-data applications because of its low waste; be sure to use a digital-coated stock so your ink sticks. If you need a label for date codes or barcodes, your best bet is thermal transfer (TTR), which requires a coated facestock.

A couple of last practical considerations.

One is the artwork and label design: most food label printing converters want a print-ready PDF file with fonts outlined and any logo as a vector, and high-quality output starts with choosing the right label material and clean files. They’ll typically offer free templates to help first-time buyers fit their text to the shape of the cut-out. Two is custom vs. stock: many new producers testing out a new recipe will start with blank, off-the-shelf label stock before upgrading to full custom labeling. Right now, the biggest food packaging labelling trend isn’t cosmetic, it’s regulatory, and it’s about packaging labels getting pulled into recyclability legislation. A 2025-adopted and 2026 implemented EU regulation known as the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) – Regulation (EU) 2025/40 – has dictated that from 2030, all packaging put on the market in the EU must be design-for-recycling-compliant and it must be technically recyclable, with a label which achieves a specific grade of recyclability no longer considered recyclable. If the incorrect glue and the incorrect facestock used, a whole PET bottle will be unable to be sorted and categorized as recyclable and so, packaging labels become not a creative element, but a compliance problem.

That pressure is reshaping materials. Labelexpo 2024 and 2025 trade coverage reveals a quick commercialization of wash-off adhesives, that allow a label strip clean from a PET bottle through out the recycling process; mono-material construction and PCR facestocks. On the state level in the U.S., EPR legislation, like California’s SB 54, applies pressure by imposing packaging fees.

For purchasers, the takeaway action is straightforward: if you sell to the EU or any state that has enacted an EPR program, ask your material supplier for wash-off, RecyClass-compatible label stock today and have them put that confirmation in writing to allow ample time, and avoid a hurried change prior to the 2030 deadline.
