What BOPP Label Film Is — and Why It Isn’t Tape
Material Definition
BOPP label film is a biaxially oriented polypropylene facestock supplied as self-adhesive stock, coated with a pressure-sensitive adhesive and mounted on a release liner so it may be printed, die-cut and dispensed as a self-adhesive label. If you’ve searched “BOPP adhesive” or “BOPP adhesive film” and landed on packaging-tape pages, that’s the confusion we’re clearing up first: BOPP tape is a carton-sealing product, while BOPP label film is a pressure-sensitive label stock engineered for print fidelity and shelf life. They share a polymer; they don’t share a purpose.
Downstream Challenge
This pain shows up downstream. A converter orders a “white BOPP” reel that looked okay on the datasheet, runs it through a flexo or thermal-transfer press, and the ink crawls or the label lifts at the corner in a chest freezer. The root cause is rarely the polypropylene itself – it’s a blend of the facestock surface treatment, the adhesive chemistry and the end use. Polypropylene is low-surface-energy by design and resists ink until it’s given a corona treatment to increase its dyne level; the adhesive must be selected for the substrate and the temperature it will be exposed to.
System Approach
Guanma’s solution is to treat BOPP label film as a system, not a SKU. We develop the facestock finish, the adhesive and the liner as one specified construction for your product, then maintain that recipe batch to batch. Each subsection below walks through the facestock finishes, the three adhesive families, how BOPP compares with PET, PVC-vinyl and paper, and the procurement realities – MOQ, lead time and regional availability – that determine whether a material really fits your line.
Guanma BOPP Facestock Range — Finishes & Specs
Most BOPP label film for self-adhesive use is between 15 and 50 microns of face film, with label-grade reels generally in the 30-50 micron range and ultra-thin transparent “no-label-look” clears running as low as 20-30 microns thickness.[1][2] Below is the practical map of what each finish does and where it justifies its presence. These are facestock specifications; the adhesive and liner are specified separately in the next section, which is precisely the flexibility a fixed catalogue can’t offer you.
Selection among them is a decision matrix, not a choice. The table below is how our application engineers channel a typical enquiry – start from the dominant need, not the finish you saw on a competitor’s sample card.
| Facestock finish | Typical face thickness | Tài sản chính | Where it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| If your priority is… | Recommended facestock | Tại sao |
|---|---|---|
| Maximum print contrast | White top-coated BOPP | Opaque base + receptive top-coat for flexo, UV and thermal-transfer printing |
| Premium “no-label” clarity | Clear BOPP, 23–38 µm | Thin caliper conforms to curved bottles, transparent, near-invisible edge |
| Decorative shelf impact | Silver-metallic or pearlized BOPP | Metallized/cavitated layer adds lustre without foil cost |
| Writable, anti-glare surface | Matte BOPP | Diffuse top-coat takes pen and laser without glare |
Adhesive Systems — Hot-Melt, Water-Based & Acrylic
This is the layer most BOPP film pages skip entirely, and it is where labels actually fail. A self-adhesive label is only as good as the pressure-sensitive adhesive holding it to a real surface at a real temperature. Guanma coats three adhesive families and tunes each as permanent or removable, so the same white BOPP facestock can be specified for a deep-freeze carton or a returnable glass bottle.

BOPP vs PET vs PVC-Vinyl vs Paper Facestock
“Which material?” is the question buyers actually search, and the honest answer is that BOPP is the value-durability sweet spot, not the outright best in every column. Our comparison below uses real-world, relative behaviour rather than Yes/No marketing checkboxes, drawing on published facestock guidance.[2][3]
| Tài sản | BOPP (PP) | PET (polyester) | PVC/vinyl | Giấy |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Two takeaways guide most decisions. First, PET endures higher heat, abrasion and solvent exposure and is the easiest film to print, but it costs more and is stiffer on tight curves — pick it when the environment is genuinely punishing. Second, vinyl conforms beautifully but, as a PVC, carries a chlorine-based recyclability penalty that brand-owners increasingly want to avoid; BOPP’s mono-polyolefin profile is the cleaner option and usually the lower material cost. When durability and budget both matter — which covers most labels — BOPP is the default, and that is why it dominates food, beverage and personal-care shelves.
Brand-owners increasingly raise the recyclability gap at the quote stage, and it is worth understanding. A BOPP label on a polypropylene or polyethylene container keeps the package within a single polyolefin family, which recycling streams handle far more cleanly than a chlorine-bearing PVC-vinyl label. That makes BOPP the lower-friction choice for any brand with a packaging-sustainability commitment — you get the moisture and oil resistance of a film without the end-of-life penalty vinyl carries. It is one of the few decisions where the cheaper material is also the cleaner one.
Application-Matched Constructions
A finish and an adhesive are only a solution when it’s a match to where the label lives. These are the constructions Guanma builds most often — a facestock + adhesive pairing chosen for a specific failure mode, not a generic “all-purpose” reel.
| Ứng dụng | Xây dựng | The requirement it solves |
|---|---|---|
| Nhãn lốp | BOPP trắng + acrylic vĩnh viễn cao-tack | Gắn bó với cao su năng lượng bề mặt thấp thông qua mài mòn và xếp chồng |
| Tủ đông /dây chuyền lạnh | BOPP trắng hoặc trong + acrylic đông lạnh sâu | Applies and holds down to roughly −40°C with no corner lift |
| Dược phẩm | BOPP trắng + acrylic kiểm soát di chuyển | Độ trung thực của bản in, truy xuất nguồn gốc, khả năng tháo rời sạch sẽ khi cần thiết |
| Hóa chất /trống | White BOPP + solvent-resistant acrylic | Constructions built for BS 5609 Section 2 marine-immersion duty[4] |
| Bao bì thực phẩm | BOPP trắng/rõ ràng + nước tiếp xúc với thực phẩm | Moisture and light grease resistance with food-suitable adhesive |
| Đồ uống & rượu vang | BOPP trong suốt hoặc ngọc trai + acrylic cường độ ướt | Sống sót ngưng tụ và ngâm trong xô đá, nhìn cao cấp |
| Bền /ngoài trời | Trắng BOPP + UV-ổn định acrylic vĩnh viễn | Thời tiết và khả năng chống tia cực tím cho dịch vụ ngoài trời mở rộng |
| Có thể tháo rời | White BOPP + removable acrylic | Clean peel with no residue on returnable assets |
Certifications & Quality Assurance
When an international buyer evaluates a new supplier, trust comes down to two things: can you prove the material meets the standard, and will reel #500 behave like reel #1? Quality consistency batch to batch is the single most-cited supplier-selection criterion in label-material sourcing — ahead of headline price — so we treat process control, not marketing, as the trust signal.

Procurement Guide — MOQ, Lead Time & Customization
Material that performs on the datasheet still has to clear procurement, and for label stock the deciding factors are consistency, lead time and minimum order — usually in that order, ahead of unit price. Here is how Guanma answers each:
Lead time & regional supply
Our coating lines run in Thailand and Vietnam, which puts production in the same region as buyers across Southeast Asia and shortens the freight leg for South America and Europe compared with single-origin China supply. In practice that means more predictable replenishment and a shorter exposure window when a campaign reorders. Exact lead times depend on facestock, adhesive and reel width, so we quote a committed window per construction rather than a marketing “fast turnaround”.
MOQ & customization
Because facestock, adhesive and liner are specified independently, you are not forced into a stock combination that is 80% right. Custom constructions stay viable at workable minimum order quantities — the point of an integrated coating-and-laminating operation is that a specialty recipe does not require a freight container to be viable.
Why consistency beats unit price
The most expensive sourcing error we see is not overpaying per square metre — it is qualifying a material on a single sample reel and then discovering reel-to-reel drift once volume production starts. A facestock that runs at 38 dynes on the approval sample but slips on later batches will pass a press one week and smear the next, and the cost of a recalled print run dwarfs any unit-price saving. That is why we tie a construction to a documented recipe and hold the surface treatment, adhesive coat weight and liner spec stable across batches, rather than re-sourcing components order by order. Ask any prospective supplier how they control batch-to-batch consistency before you compare quotes; the answer tells you more than the number does.

BOPP Label Film FAQ
BOPP is a polypropylene film that is thinner, lower in material cost and easier to recycle as a mono-polyolefin; vinyl (PVC) is thicker and more conformable to tight curves but carries a chlorine-based recyclability penalty. For most product labels BOPP delivers the durability buyers want without vinyl’s cost or sustainability drawbacks.
Sự khác biệt giữa nhãn BOPP và PET là gì?
PET (polyester) withstands high temperatures, abrasion and solvent exposure and is the easiest film to print but it is more expensive and more rigid. BOPP is the value-durability choice for utilitarian labels designed for daily water-resistant performance, plus moisture- and oil-resistance but PET is well-worth the premium for genuinely ‘harsh’ service conditions.
BOPP trắng có chống thấm nước không?
White BOPP facestock is inherently waterproof in everyday use and highly water-resistant, which is why it dominates food, beverage and personal-care labels; in-depth performance when truly submerged depends on the whole construction – the adhesive and any laminate matter as much as the film. For use in chemical-drum or marine environments, ask for a construction tailored to BS5609 Section 2 criteria.
What is gloss white BOPP?
Gloss white BOPP is an opaque white facestock with a high-sheen top surface that produces vivid colour and a premium retail finish. It pairs a scuff-resistant white base with a glossy receptive coating; choose matte instead when you need a low-glare, writable surface.
Who makes BOPP label film in China and Southeast Asia?
Guanma is a self-adhesive label material manufacturer with coating and laminating lines in Thailand and Vietnam, supplying Southeast Asia, South America and Europe. Unlike bare-film mills, we coat the adhesive and laminate the liner in-house, so you specify a finished BOPP label stock — facestock, adhesive and liner — rather than buying a substrate and sourcing the rest.
Do you supply BOPP label film in jumbo rolls or custom widths?
Yes. We supply jumbo rolls for converters who slit in-house, as well as slit-to-width finished rolls. Reel format is a cost lever in your quotation, so tell us your slitting capability and target widths and we will recommend the most economical format.
