Print and adhesion fail when the surface energy sits beneath the bonding window; untreated PP ranges 29-32 mN/m and ink/PS adhesives require 38 mN/m to properly wet and hold. Corona increases PP surface energy to 38-42 mN/m to let ink and adhesive spread rather than bead up.

Polypropylene, a “low-surface energy” (LSE) material as designed, is the cause of the phenomenon “LSE materials look good, but peel open upon entering service, according to field service reports on failed label applications.”

Corona treatment won’t last forever – dynes are lost over time and through handling. A film with a 40-dyne reading on the approval reel might fall beneath the 38-mark when it’s being processed on line for actual production volumes.

📐 Engineering Note — working the bond window

An HDPE bottle reads about 31 mN/m at the surface. That’s below the 38–42 mN/m window, so a standard acrylic won’t wet out and the label corner lifts within hours. Fixing it takes two moves: corona-treat the BOPP facestock to 38–42 mN/m y pair it with a high-tack hot-melt or water-based acrylic rated for that substrate. Map your own container’s dyne reading against the 38 mN/m line before you specify the adhesive, the surface, not the film grade, usually decides the failure. The general rules tend to come in just two. First, opt for a PET facestock-instead of BOPP-if the application is truly extreme: consistently hot temperatures, corrosive solvents or long-term, tough exposures to UV radiation and abrasion. Second, vinyl looks great wrapped tightly around contours but as a poly vinyl chloride plastic carries a penalty for chlorine in recycling schemes, a penalty brand owners are starting to shun in favor of the cleaner, generally cheaper BOPP profile, a mono-polyolefin.

If it’s going to be squeezed – lotions orqueeze bottles – polyolefin or polyethylene may be best, while for a blend of good durability and the right price, BOPP is the de facto. And it typically finds itself on food, beverage, and personal care items.

Don’t re-run the job: If it’s a clear BOPP it needs a clear poly liner for its flatness, and the best way to ensure printability is to check the dyne level of the reel incoming on your press, not the original sample. One common printing mistake is qualifying ink or ribbon on the approval reel and skipping the incoming-reel dyne check. In practice, a converter who does that can lose a full production shift to ink rub-off before tracing it to a facestock that drifted from 40 to 36 dyne/cm in storage — below the 38 mN/m the ink needed. How to define your numbers – In defining a BOPP label material, you need more than the material description; understanding what the published numbers mean will help you avoid application failure. Common tests on label materials relate to adhesion, often defined as: FINAT FTM 1 (Peel Adhesion @ 180 degrees) and FINAT FTM 9 (Loop Tack), both of the order of Newtons. Adhesion will often also be published to ASTM D3330 (Peel adhesion of pressure sensitive materials). These numbers give you an idea of order of magnitude. An example one: Water-based acrylic adhesion has 24hr Peel @ 180deg FINAT FTM 1 = 11 N (180), Loop Tack FINAT FTM 9 = 14N. Remember ASTM’s disclaimer on D3330 for design info.

The 5-Check BOPP Supplier Qualification Sequence

  1. Caliper – The facestock thickness in micrometer. Check against your cutter and dispensing equipment specifications.
  2. Dyne Level – Ask for a 38-42mN/m Corona surface energy with a method for ensuring stability and holding.
  3. Peel / Tack – You’ll see results published in Finat standards like FTM 1 (Peel) and FTM 9 (Loop Tack). You may also see ASTM D3330. ask how those figures are to your actual substrate, not on some generic dummy substrate in a lab.
  4. End Use References – if a chemical drum label, ask for BS5609 Part 2 compliance and testing documentation. For a food label, what are the specific regulatory conformances of the adhesive ( FDA 21 CFR 175.105 ).
  5. Consistency – What measures are in place to ensure consistency of surface treatment, adhesive coat weight, liner etc reel to reel as opposed to a one-off sample.

The last one is probably the one skipped by most buyers and probably regretted by all of them. The most expensive sourcing mistake isn’t paying too much a square meter – it’s validating material to an approval run and then having it reel to reel drift in production.
