Beverage & wine labels are the printed facestocks — adhesive-backed, glued, or shrunk on — that carry a drink’s mandatory legal statements and its brand identity on the container. They pull double duty: they’re both federal legal documents and your brand’s introduction to customers. Falter at the artwork and a beautifully produced bottle never sees the light of day. What Goes on a Beverage or Wine Label? Anatomy + Mandatory vs. Marketing

A wine label has two territories: the brand face a customer sees first, and every other panel (usually the back). Everything on them falls into one of two camps — required government content, or brand content. Wine label requirements sit with the TTB; non-alcoholic drink labels answer to the FDA under 21 CFR 101 instead.
Confusing the two camps is the mistake that sinks a first submission: reviewers read the mandatory statements as one block, so marketing copy that crowds the panel can fail review because the required text is no longer “separate and apart.” In practice, a production die line reserves the Government Warning band and the 2 mm brand-name floor before any artwork is drawn.
On a wine bottle, information can be mapped onto up to five zones.

What should be on a wine label?
Any U.S. wine label must carry seven items: the brand name; a class or type designation (say “Red Wine” or “Chardonnay”); alcohol content; net quantity of contents; the name and address of the bottler or importer; the Government Warning; and a sulfite declaration once the wine holds 10 ppm or more of sulfur dioxide.
Naming a grape variety, a vintage date, or “Estate Bottled” also forces an appellation of origin onto the label. Everything else — a logo, accolades, your vineyard’s story, a UPC — is optional and must be visually segregated from the government-mandated text. The 4 Types of Beverage & Wine Labels (How They’re Applied)

There are four ways to get a label onto a bottle or can: pressure-sensitive (self-adhesive), cut-and-stack (wet-glue), shrink sleeve, and mould-in-label. Format choice isn’t cosmetic; it decides your line speed, your decoration ceiling, and your recyclability. Most premium wine runs use pressure-sensitive; high-speed water and soda often use cut and stack labels; full-body cans and contoured bottles use shrink sleeve labels. Format is the one call you cannot reverse cheaply: locking artwork first is an expensive mistake, because the applicator, not the design, fixes line speed and the decoration ceiling. Sleeves carry a reported ~25% cost premium over pressure-sensitive for that reason, and the tradeoff buys roughly 150% more branding area. Beverage & Wine Label Sizes (Standard Dimensions)

The most popular front wine label size on a standard 750 mL bottle is about 3.5 × 4 inches, though real dimensions run from about 3 × 4 in up to 4 × 6 in depending on the bottle family. There’s no single legal size; these are industry norms set by bottle shape and press economics, not by the TTB. A common mistake is ordering stock to a template instead of to the bottle: a 3.5 × 4 in cell that sits flat on a Bordeaux punt will bind on a sparkling shoulder, because glass profiles differ by mould, and the risk lands on the production run, not the proof. In practice, a converter confirms the die against the actual bottle before the first pass, and Guanma cuts the roll to that die.

What size are wine labels?
For a standard 750 mL bottle, plan a front label near 3.5 × 4 in and a back label of the same footprint. Sparkling wine usually runs slightly taller, about 3.5 × 4.5 in, to clear the shoulder. Neck labels sit far smaller, roughly 1 × 2 in to 2 × 4 in, and a wrap label is sized to the bottle circumference rather than to a rectangle.
If you order pre-cut sheets or blank stock, a 3.5 × 4 in cell is a common template size on standard letter sheet labels, which is why so many do-it-yourself wine bottle label and bottle label kits default to it. Choose roll labels when your applicator runs a reel-fed line. Your converter finalizes the dimension against the actual bottle and the die.

Label Requirements & Compliance: TTB, FDA & the 75/85/95 Rule

The biggest challenge when labeling wine bottles is typically ensuring your compliance. Regulations generally fall under two government agencies: the FDA handles alcoholic beverages under 7 percent ABV as well as all non-alcoholic drinks, and the TTB is responsible for regulating wine, beer and other alcohol that has a ABV higher than 7 percent under the Federal Alcohol Administration Act. Here’s the regulation as it stands today- not proposals and not design opinion.

The Government Warning must be exact. This is the single most common reason the TTB rejects a COLA. Every word, every mark of punctuation, and the bold on the first two words are fixed:
“GOVERNMENT WARNING: (1) According to the Surgeon General, women should not drink alcoholic beverages during pregnancy because of the risk of birth defects. (2) Consumption of alcoholic beverages impairs your ability to drive a car or operate machinery, and may cause health problems.”

This surprises most first-time producers. Mandatory wording is “Alc. __% by Vol.” or “__% alc. by vol.” — the shorthand “13.5% ABV” is a documented rejection reason. Wines over 14% ABV must show a numeric statement (with a ±1% tolerance); wines from 7–14% ABV may omit the number if the label carries “table wine” or “light wine” as the class/type. Net contents must be metric: “750 mL,” never “25.3 oz.”
What is the 75/85/95 rule for wine?
Behind the 75/85/95 rule sit three sourcing thresholds in 27 CFR Part 4. Name a grape variety and at least 75% of the wine must come from it (4.23). Name a viticultural area and 85% of the grapes must come from that AVA (4.25); a state or county appellation needs only 75%. A vintage date carries its own threshold (4.27).
One nuance the shorthand hides: under 27 CFR 4.27, the 95% vintage figure applies only when the appellation is a viticultural area (an AVA such as Napa Valley). If the appellation is a county or a state, the vintage requirement drops to 85%. Claiming “Napa Valley” with 70% Napa grapes is a violation, because an AVA appellation demands 85%.
Beyond the label copy: the EU and the states. If you export to the European Union, EU Regulation 2021/2117 has required an ingredient list and a nutrition declaration on wine produced from December 8, 2023 onward, with a QR “e-label” permitted to carry the full detail off-pack. Wine produced before that date may still be sold from existing stock without them. And a federal COLA is only the first gate: states run their own decency and labeling reviews. A famous case saw Alabama ban the TTB-approved “Cycles Gladiator” label on state grounds, proof that federal approval doesn’t guarantee a shelf.
Designing a Beverage or Wine Label (Elements, Decoration, DIY vs. Professional)

Good label design starts by separating the fixed from the free: lock the mandatory statements into a legible block first, then design the brand story around them. Typography, imagery, color, and finishing are the creative levers, and the finishing is where premium bottles earn their price.
Decoration methods stack on top of the printed label design: hot foil for metallic shine, cold foil for cost-efficient metallic over large areas, embossing and debossing for tactile depth, spot UV for contrast gloss, and screen printing for heavy opaque whites. Trends in wine label design for 2025-2026, per label-industry trend reports, point to minimalist layouts, sustainable materials, and textured finishes that invite touch. Under 27 CFR 16.22 the Government Warning also carries its own type-size floor, so decoration never gets the last word on layout. A strong wine label design pairs those finishes with a facestock that prints cleanly, which is why professionally printed retail labels rarely come off a desktop printer.
DIY or professional? For a wedding, a gift, or a 30-bottle home batch, a Canva or Avery template where you upload your own design and personalize the text is fast and cheap. Printable labels on letter-size label sheets — blank wine labels, in practice — run through an inkjet with no tooling at all, and most sellers of custom wine labels online will ship a personalized label run for a wine bottle within a few days. Once you need a custom wine label for retail, with foil, precise color, waterproof film, and a legal Government Warning, you move to a converter. A custom printed wine label from a converter is a different product: a DIY inkjet paper label won’t survive an ice bucket, and it can’t deliver the type-size and contrast the TTB demands. That handoff point is the real decision, not the software.
Design the back label around the highest limitation: The government Warning character limit. It permits no more than 40 characters to the inch at 1mm type, 25 to the inch at 2mm, and 12 to the inch at 3mm. Position that block in front of your sales copy, and you’ll avoid a frustrating cram session for the proof.
How Beverage Labels Are Printed (Flexo, Digital, Offset & Screen)

Four different print processes apply to most beverage labels, but you usually base your choice on run length and SKU count for wine label printing. If it’s short and diverse, go digital. For long runs, flexo.
Screen and offset apply thick inks and fine tonal values, respectively. Whichever you select, make sure you give us a print-ready file at the die line and check if you’re running the job roll or sheet labels on the converter’s press.

Worked example. Imagine a wine brand with six different vintages and 5,000 bottles each, that’s 30,000 labels on six versions. Per-version plate cost on a flexo press runs high across such short runs, so a digital solution is often preferred. There are no plates, and switching from one version to the next is simply switching a file.
Expand that one favorite SKU to 50,000 bottles annually, without any design changes: the cost of the plates gets distributed across such a large quantity, and the ink cost per piece on the flexo press drops below digital. That break point is roughly where a single version clears ~5,000 units and stops changing. Your CCK release liner choice also affects how fast either press can dispense.
Label Needs by Beverage: Wine, Spirits, Beer, Water, Juice & Canned Drinks

Types of drink labels diverge by nemesis, the single job each label must survive, and it’s rarely the same one: a wine label sits at room temperature, a sparkling label spends its evening in an ice bucket, a water label rides in a gym bag. The common thread across many wine-fridge complaints is moisture. Wine-fridge humidity “peels labels off,” mold blooming behind them, wine-lovers lament on r/wine, while professionals report that as the paper “gets wet, it starts to expand and wrinkle.” This is a material challenge, not a design one, as you’ll see in the following sections. Choosing the Right Label Material (Quick Orientation)

Label material comes down to three families, paper, film, and synthetic paper, and the right one depend on the stressor from the table above, not on which feels thickest. That last point matter: reaching for thicker paper is the intuitive fix for peeling, and it’s the wrong one.

Wet-strength paper is not thicker paper, it carries a polyamide-epichlorohydrin (PAE) additive at the wet end, and wet tensile retention is gauged using ISO 3781 / TAPPI T 456. A 90-gsm wet-strength estate stock will hold up longer in an ice bucket than a 120-gsm untreated stock, because moisture resistance is a function of chemistry, not caliper. Material options run wider than the three families listed: kraft facestock for a more rugged aesthetic, vinyl labels to withstand harsh external elements, and durable waterproof films for situations where products are submerged. 2026 Outlook: Sustainability, Cans & Connected Labels

Regulatory and structural shifts, in addition to visual trends, are driving changes in beverage and wine labels in 2026, and each one changes what buyers should spec now.
Recyclability is becoming a design mandate, not a marketing choice. With design-for-recycling expectations and wash-off adhesive requirements, a label increasingly has to detach cleanly at the wash step so the bottle stays in a bottle-to-bottle stream. This is a materials problem, not a graphics one: the patent literature on caustic-wash-releasable label adhesives goes back more than a decade, and the constructions that pass a NaOH wash are not the ones that survive a 72-hour ice bath. Practical action: if recyclability matters to your retailer, spec a wash-off or paper-compatible construction now rather than retrofitting later. And be careful with the claim itself, under the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260), a “recyclable” or “eco-friendly” claim on a label must be substantiated, and a broad environmental-benefit claim can be treated as deceptive. As one label-industry source put it, the most sustainable-looking option isn’t always the most sustainable-performing one.
The can is eating the bottle’s edge. Sales of canned wine reportedly increased by over 20% in both volume and value during the 52 weeks ending in August 2025. Canned products typically use shrink-sleeve and pressure-sensitive labels rather than traditional paper labels for bottles, allowing a full 360° of graphics on a recyclable aluminum body. Shrink-sleeve label revenue worldwide runs into the tens of billions of dollars (order of magnitude, for background information only), but the more significant indicator for buyers is the transition to the can format rather than the market’s overall size.
Labels are going digital and disclosure is tightening. Europe already routes wine ingredients and nutrition to a QR e-label, and more connected-label pilots are running for authentication and engagement. Two U.S. changes are worth watching as proposed, not current law: on January 17, 2025 the TTB published notices proposing Alcohol Facts and major food-allergen disclosures (comment period extended to August 15, 2025), and the U.S. Surgeon General issued an advisory linking alcohol to cancer risk. None of these is required today, but each could add a mandatory statement to your back label within a couple of label cycles, a reason to keep back-label real estate in reserve.
